No. 3 Corning Union hosted No. 6 Wheatland for the first round of Division 2 playoffs at Cardinal Stadium. Sealing a shut out 53-14 win over the Pirates, Corning Union advances to the semi-finals against Sutter this week.

Corning Union hosted the Winters Warriors for the Cardinal’s last regular, non-league game of the season. What started off as an emotional night for the Corning seniors soon turned into a battle on the field as the Young Cardinals secure a 54 – 30 win over their opponent.

Cards blast Wheatland, advance to face Sutter

Corning Union opened the Division II playoffs with a 53-14 victory against visiting Wheatland High at Cardinal Stadium on Thursday.

The No. 3 seed Cardinals (8-3) move on to the second round against No. 2 Sutter (9-1) which had a bye in the first round.

Sutter and Corning share five common opponents. Both teams beat Anderson, Winters and Wheatland by wide margins and lost to Orland. The only game where the result hasn’t been the same was against West Valley. Sutter beat the Northern Athletic League Champion Eagles 7-0 in week one and Corning lost 18-10 on Oct. 7.

Since that loss, the Cardinals have won five straight. The Huskies won their first nine games of the season but lost to Orland in the final week of the regular season.

The game is schedule for 7 p.m. at Sutter High School on Friday, Nov. 18.

In the other DII playoff game, No. 4 Lassen ripped No. 5 Gridley 52-21 to advance to face No. 1 Orland, which had a bye, on Friday.

The Corning Cardinals traveled to Central Valley for their 4th and final Northern Athletic League competition. Both wing-T offensive teams also displayed strong defensive schemes but the Cardinals were able to come out on top and secure a 3-1 league record with a 34-20 win over the Falcons.

The Cardinals secure their 2nd Northern Athletic league victory against the Yreka Miners. With an impenetrable defense and explosive offense, Corning Union was able to shut out the traveling Miners with a 46-0 win at Cardinal Stadium.
